Securing a tree with stakes, ties and Tree Anchors

There are many different fields of thought regarding how to stake a tree.  At Provender Nurseries we like to offer you different options to select from.  Whichever option you choose all newly planted trees should be staked in some way shape or form.

Staking newly planted trees prevents root rock caused by wind movement that in turn causes damage to the roots.  Poor root development results in trees that are slow to establish and more prone to drought stress.

Staking a tree gives a good solid start in life and after a couple of years your tree will have put down string roots and will be anchored to the surrounding soil.

Tree Stakes & ties:

Provender Nurseries offer 2 types of tree stakes depending on the required finished look; machine rounded and peeled.  Both are available in 1.8m and 2.4m lengths depending on the height of the tree you are planting.  All of our tree stakes are FSC certified.

Also in stock is a wide range of tree ties and tree straps.  Depending on the size of your project, if you are planting one then our range of buckle and softee tree ties will be fine.  If planting larger numbers then tree strap roll available in two different widths is a more economical choice.  Don’t forget rubber blocks to cushion between the stake and tree to prevent rubbing and also clout nails if required.  Remember to check tree ties on an annual basis and loosen as necessary.

Tree Anchors:

If your client wants a more streamlined look and does not want to see stakes above ground then Platipus Tree Anchor & Plati-mat are a really professional approach.

Platipus Tree Anchors are a professional system for securing rootballed and containerised semi mature trees. The Plati-mat provides greater contact area at the top of the rootball, for a more secure fixing.  Each kit option includes 3 x Anchors, 1 x Ratchet and 3 x Protective mats (Plati-mat).

We hold 2 sizes in stock depending on what size tree you are planting;

  • RF1P is for use on trees with a girth size of 10/12cm up to 20/25cm and multistems from 2.5m to 4.5m
  • RF2P is for use on trees with a girth size of 20/25cm up to 45cm and multistems from 4.5m to 7.5m

A great example of usage of Platipus Tree Anchors is at the London Olympic Park where all trees were planted using these.

Don’t forget the installation tools:
