Winter interest plants

Winter is a time of plenty. There is huge amount of interest to be had in the garden. Berries, bark, buds, stems, scent, flowers and form all provide valuable winter colour and interest. Here are some of our current favourite winter interest plants:

Chaenomeles

Chaenomeles, also known as ‘Japanese Quince/Flowering Quince’ are great wall shrub plants. The early spring flowers are a delight heralding the onset of warmer weather ahead.

We have lots of these in stock in a variety of different sizes to meet all your needs.

 

Garrya elliptica 

Again, this is another great wall shrub plant. Garrya Elliptica (Tassel Bush) is an evergreen shrub that has long silky catkins around February time. A great plant for tolerating pollution in urban areas. Reaches a height of 3 metres.

 

Helleborus niger

Helleborus niger (Christmas Rose/Lentern Rose) - the perfect winter plant. The stunning pure white flowers light up a winters day from November to March and is available in many variants (from 9cm pots to 2L pots).

 

Viburnum tinus

Viburnum tinus (Laurustinus). This versatile evergreen shrub thrives in both the sun and shade. The clusters of white, pink budded flowers open from December to March – perfect for this time of the year.

Viburnum tinus is also ideal for hedging.

Chimonanthus praecox

Chimonanthus praecox (Wintersweet). This deciduous shrub has a lovely winter scent produced from its beautiful yellow flowers.

Chimonanthus praecox reaches 3m high and 3m wide. It truly is a must for winter gardens.

We have sizes available from 10L all the way through to 130L – what more could you need?!

Skimmia

We have a variety of different Skimmia plants available to purchase right away. Here are a few that we’re loving at the moment:

Skimmia japonica ‘Fragrans’ (Fragrant Cloud) is a free-flowering plant. It has a dome shaped habitat with dense panicles of white flowers, scented of Lily of the Valley, in March and April. 3L available.

Skimmia japonica 'Rubella' – is a compact, slow-growing evergreen plant that has red buds in the winter and scented pink-white flowers in the spring. 1 metre x 1 metre.

Skimmia japonica ‘Tansley Gem’ is a dense, evergreen shrub that has white scented flowers followed by red berries – absolutely beautiful!
