Evergreen Climbing Plant Options

Evergreen climbers provide maximum impact and can really be used in a variety of situations – not just to cover a fence.  Used for climbing up walls, pergolas, providing screening and privacy, climbing through trees, attracting wildlife, scented flowers, berries, evergreen climbing plants provide more than an evergreen backdrop all year round. 

Bearing in mind the eventual height of the plant, there are a few more plants to choose from for evergreen climbing options than you may think at first.  Listed below is a great selection of evergreen climbing plants some a little more on the unusual side and always worth a try for that something a little different. 

  • Akebia longaeracemosa.  Semi-evergreen with dark green leaves that are tinged blue below and a purple hue in the winter months.  Scented purple flowers.  Height 8m.  Partial shade.  Sun.
  • Akebia quinata ‘Cream Form’.  Scented cream flowers.  Height 8m.  Partial shade.  Sun.

  • Clematis armandii ‘Apple Blossom’.  Large leathery leaves.  Very light pink vanilla scented flowers.  A great option for scrambling through trees and large shrubs.  Foliage takes on a bronze colour in the spring.  Height 6m.  Sun.

  • Clematis cirrhosa ‘Freckles’.  Finely cut foliage that takes on a bronze hue in the winter months.  Pale scented flowers that are heavily speckled pink – purple colouration.  Attractive seed heads in the winter.  Sun.  Height 4m
  • Clematis cirrhosa ‘Wisley Cream.  Finely cut foliage that takes on a bronze hue in the winter months.  Creamy white scented flowers that are heavily speckled pink – purple colouration.  Attractive seed heads in the winter.  Sun.  Height 4m
  • Hecera helix ‘Wonder Classe’.  Green leaves with pale yellow variegation. 
  • Hedera algeriensis ‘Gloire de Marengo’.  Large leathery dark green leaves with an irregular creamy coloured margin.  Height 4m.  Partial Shade.  Sun
  • Hedera colchica ‘Dentata Variegata’.  Large leathery dark green leaves with an irregular yellow-green margin.  Height 5m.  Partial Shade.  Sun
  • Hedera colchica ‘Sulphur Heart’.  Also known as ‘Paddy’s Pride’.  Large green leaves with a central blotch of yellow – light green.  Height 6m.  Shade.  Sun- partial shade

  • Holboellia latifolia.  Dark green leaves with white flowers and purple flowers.  Height 5m.  Partial Shade.  Sun
  • Hydrangea seemannii.  Large glossy leaves.  Lime green- white hydrangea like flowers in the summer.  Height 10m.  Shade.  Partial shade.  Sun
  • Kadsura japonica ‘Fukurin’.  Cream and light green variegated foliage.  Magnolia like pendant flowers.  Slow growing.  Height 4m.  Partial shade.  Sun

  • Lonicera japonica var. ‘Repens’.  Semi-evergreen.  Purple stems and green-purple leaves.  Scented white flowers flushed red – purple on the outer petals.  Height 8m.  Partial shade.  Sun
  • Lonicera similis var. delavayi.  Semi-evergreen.  Dark green leaves and fragrant yellow – cream flowers.  Great for bees.  Height 5m.  Partial shade.  Sun
  • Muehlenbeckia complexa.  An unusual plant with wiry stems with tiny dark green leaves and small white flowers.  Semi-evergreen.   Can also be used as a ground cover choice.  Partial Shade.  Sun. 
  • Passiflora caerula.  A vigorous choice reaching 4m with unusual flowers up to 10cm across. Semi-evergreen.  Height 10m.  Sun. 
  • Solanum crispum Glasnevin.  A vigorous climber reaching 3m.  Blue flowers with a prominent yellow eye.  Semi-evergreen.  Height 6m.  Sun
  • Solanum laxum Album.  A vigorous climber with pure white flowers with a prominent yellow eye. Height 3m.  Semi-evergreen.  Sun. 
  • Sollya heterophylla. Deep green leaves with clusters of sky blue nodding flowers followed by small purple berries.  Height 2m.  Partial shade.  Sun.
  • Trachelospermum jasminoides ‘Star of Toscana’.  Glossy green foliage.  Soft yellow scented flowers in summer. Height 9m.  Sun.
