Terrific Trachelospermum

Terrific Trachelospermum

Nothing says a Mediterranean climber that s hardy in the UK like a Trachelospermum does.  The glossy evergreen foliage takes on a red tint in the winter to add to seasonal interest.  Again Trachelospermum does not have its origins in the Mediterranean but is often used in such gardens due to the scent and longevity of the flowers.

Trachelospermum jasminoides has almost all you could want in a plant; evergreen, glossy leaves with a great autumn colour and to top it all off heavily scented jasmine-like flowers.   Not surprisingly it is one of our most popular plants at Provender Nurseries.  It is ideal for a sunny wall providing a dense cover of glossy evergreen leaves and small attractive star-shaped flowers that when viewed close up look like tiny whorls.  Vigorous in growth once established and easy to prune and is perfect for covering pergolas, walls and fences and a great companion to plant with other climbers.

Trachelospermum are now available in a wider range of forms than a few years ago with arches and panels now joining the list of options.

We have some brilliant varieties in and they are already filling the display glasshouse with their intoxicating scent.

  • Trachelospermum jasminoides is a brilliant plant that works its socks off all year round –glossy, evergreen foliage that takes on a red-bronze colour in the colder months and oodles of 5 petalled star-shaped scented flowers in the summer.
  • Trachelospermum jasminoides ‘Water Wheel’ has very unusual foliage and can be grown almost as ground cover or a trailing plant in a pot.  Slow-growing shiny, dark green foliage. Very sweetly-scented flowers are creamy white.
  • Trachelospermum jasminoides ‘Star of Toscana’ produces soft yellow sweetly scented, star-shaped flowers throughout summer.
  • Trachelospermum jasminoides ‘Variegatum’ has leaves with white variegation plus red-pink tints, especially during cold periods. Flowers are white or creamy-white and are very fragrant.

Trachelospermum asiaticum needs a little more protection the further north you go but is fine to plant down here in the south.

  • Trachelospermum asiaticum ‘Golden Memories’ is slow-growing shiny, golden foliage with creamy-white flowers.
  • Trachelospermum asiaticum Pink Showers has soft candy pink flowers in the summer months.
  • Trachelospermum asiaticum Mandanianum is a reasonably new introduction with white flowers that have a yellow centre.
  • Trachelospermum asiaticum Theta has dark grey-green foliage with a silver mid-rib and creamy white flowers.
