If you want happy, healthy plants then you need the right ingredients to help a plant to thrive and survive.

The essential ingredients for any ericaceous plants are:

Ericaceous Compost

Ericaceous plants need ericaceous soil and we have many an option in stock for you, no matter how big or small the area.

Ericaceous soil provides all the nutrients in the right balance that an ericaceous plants need.  It is never worth scrimping on the correct soil for a plant – it’s like baking a cake without the correct ingredients!

We hold bulk bags of ericaceous compost in stock for covering and planting in large areas. We also hold 35L and 60L bags for containerised planting or if you are planting one ericaceous plant.

Ericoid Mycorrhizal Fungi & Ericaceous After Plant

If you want to give your ericaceous plants the best possible start in life then Rootgrow Ericoid Mycorrhizal Fungi is the way to go.  Especially formulated for ericaceous plants this blend is ideal for use on Acers, Azaleas, Cornus and all other ericaceous loving plants.

Sprinkle a little of the fungi at the bottom of each planting hole ensuring contact with the roots and within 4 weeks the Rootgrow helps to develop a secondary root system that will support the plant by supplying nutrients and water that are essential for plant growth.

If you have forgotten to use the Ericoid Mycorrhizal Fungi when planting, then all is not lost with After Plant, Ericaceous Bio-Active Plant Feed.  Formulated for use after planting simply sprinkle 25-50g (1-2 handfuls) per plant around the base of the plant and water well.  In containers apply 50-75g (2-3 handfuls) twice a year to sustain healthy growth.

Both are available in weatherproof re-sealable pouches.

Composted Bark

As you know we at Provender Nurseries are fans of applying mulch to plants.  The benefits of applying mulch cannot be overstated.

Adding a layer of organic mulch is probably the best thing you can do for the health of your plants and soil and applying now will continue to benefit plants and soils all year round and in all weathers.

It is best to remove all weeds and fallen leaves, which may harbour pests and diseases before applying a layer of mulch.  Mulch is best applied in the autumn or spring when there is still some residual warmth in the soil.  Mulch is best applied on moist soils after planting and watering to a depth of 5cm and can be applied in beds, borders and containers.

As far as most of your customers see it mulch provides a clean decorative finish to a bed and accentuates the plants.  However you can always promote the other benefits of applying mulch to your clients.

Mulch is magic! It helps to supress weeds, helps soils retain moisture, improves the texture of the soil as it breaks down and helps protect plant roots from extreme cold and heat.  Mulch can be applied to any planting whether newly planted, on existing beds, specimen trees and also on containers.  It is best practice to apply mulch to a depth of 5cm and keep mulch away from the stems of shrubs and trees.

The best mulch for ericaceous plants is composted bark which is sized to 0-10mm. A fine grade composted bark that is suitable for adding to professional growing media, a soil conditioner & mulch or base for planting compost.  A layer of composted bark increases organic content & moisture retention.  Neutral pH.
