National Tree Week – Berry Interesting.  The Spotlight is on Sorbus

Sorbus are commonly known as Rowan, Whitebeam, Mountain Ash.  Greatly valued for their ornamental value, autumn colour and of course autumn berry Sorbus are a popular choice for interest and attracting wildlife. 

Sorbus are entwined with many folklore stories and mythology.  The Victorians believed that the amount of berries produced indicated predicted snow fall for the coming winter months.  Get counting…….

SORBUS

Sorbus aria Magnifica.  Red berries.  A good choice for windy conditions.  Upright habit. 

Sorbus ulle. Olympic Flame.  Coppery foliage in spring.  Orange red berries.  Red to orange autumn foliage. 

Sorbus Autumn Spire.  White flowers in summer.  Orange- yellow berries. Purple, red and yellow in autumn.  Columnar habit. 

Sorbus Eastern Promise.  Clusters of flowers are followed by rose-pink berries.  Red- oaring and purple foliage colour in the autumn. 

Sorbus hupehensis Pink Pagoda.  Bluish tinted foliage when young.  Rose pink berries.  Ideal choice for small garden. 

Sorbus Sunshine.  Erect habit.  Bright yellow berries are held in dense clusters.
