Autumn Spectacular begins with Euonymus alatus Compactus

Each autumn the foliage colour of Euonymus alatus Compactus blazes through the sky at you and dares you to walk by without saying oooh.

The colour this year is a little early but the blazing red and the oooohhhh are just as strong as every autumn.

These are slow growing shrubs that require absolutely no pruning to maintain the majestic shape.  The stems have broad cork-like wings that add a certain air of magic to them.  But the autumn colour is the main reason for finding room for one of these.  The seeds that appear are held in purple – red fruits that are also a brilliant colour.

The best autumn foliage colour is achieved when planted in full sun to semi-hade and pretty much left to its own devices.  We will be keeping an eye on these handsome plants as they continue to change colour in the next few weeks.
