Irrigation and Mulch

Irrigation and Mulch

Applying a mulch is an excellent method for reducing water stress.

Mulching Tips

  • Apply a mulch AFTER watering
  • Applying a mulch is one of the most efficient ways to conserve water and reduce soil temperature around the root zone
  • Mulch helps to retain soil moisture around the root zones and protects from extreme temperatures
  • Mulch can be applied in beds, borders and containers
  • Apply a mulch every two years to help conserve water and improve soil structure
  • Mulch to around 5-7cm in depth – do not mulch up to plant tree stems

Simple Tricks to help with water conservation:

  • Remove any weeds or unwanted plants that will compete for water
  • Irrigation is best applied early in the morning or in the evening when less water is lost to evaporation in the heat of the day.
  • Use drip irrigation for plants in containers
  • Place saucers under containers
  • Group containers in gravel trays for easy watering
  • Consider moving containers to a more shady spot whilst the weather is very hot
  • Check existing watering systems for efficiency and leaks
