What makes it WOW?

• Almost black stem

• Compact, crisp rosette of dark green fronds up to 1m in length

• Stem reaches 20cm dia

• Thrives in partial to full shade

• Thrives in wet areas

• Ericaceous to neutral soil

• Moisture retentive soil but not waterlogged

• Plant in organic-rich soil

• More tolerant of wind and sun than other Dicksonia

• Keep the crown and trunk moist

 

A bit of history:

• Part of the ancient Dicksonia family that has existed for toughly 200 million years

• Named by Scottish botanist James Dickson

• Squarrosa means having scales

• Endemic to New Zealand

• Maori name is Wheki
