Betula nigra - as shown at RHS Chelsea Flower Show 2025

Betula nigra or River Birch is known for the unusual bark that makes it stand out from other Betula.

Rather than the bold white bark colouration of Betula jacquemontii, Betula nigra has almost shaggy, curling bark peeling off in sheets of pink-orange to brown-cinnamon.

In the spring, long yellow catkins cover the tree as the green foliage emerges. In the autumn, the foliage turns buttery yellow before falling revealing the papery peeling bark again.

Betula nigra is one of the best tree choices for wet soils. It can also withstand high temperatures, making it an ideal choice for a changing climate. This is a delightful tree when mature with a striking conical crown.

Alongside some excellent multi-stem Betula nigra, we have some other Betula nigra options to take your fancy, click here to view them.
