Vitis vinifera 'Purpurea'

Vitis vinifera 'Purpurea'

Description: A vigorous ornamental vine noted for its rich plum purple throughout summer turning darker in the autumn. Small, unpalatable purple grapes are also produced in autumn.

Looks very effective when grown near silver leaved plants for strong contrasting effect

Ideal for covering a fence or wall.

Climate/Position: Full sun to partial shade

Height/Spread: 7 metres x 3 metres spread.

Soil Requirements: Any well drained soil but shows best autumn colour on poor or chalky soils

Pruning: Best planted where sufficient space to ensure pruning is not required. If trimming straggly pieces then do this in mid winter as the sap tends to 'bleed' at other times of the year.

Special Requirements: If training over a tree, wall or pergola then provide some support to start and tie it in as it grows. When a good framework is developed then shorten all the lateral shoots to within two or three buds from the main stem.
