Malus 'Van Eseltine'

Description: An older variety with columnar habit producing a mass of red buds in late spring which open to shell pink with paler pink centres to the flowers and when flower cluster have open flowers and buds together the colour range makes a very attractive site.  Fresh green foliage in summer and small yellow fruits tinted red can be seen in autumn.

Uses: As it has a failrly narrow habit it is an ideal as a tree for the smaller garden. 

Climate/Position: Sunny location.

Height/Spread: 5 metres x 3 metres spread

Soil Requirements: Any fertile well drained soil

Pruning: Any pruning should be done afer flowering but apart from a tidy and removal of damaged shoots pruning should be limited.

Special Requirements: Avoid waterlogged situations

Additional Interest: Raised between 1930 and 1941 in New York by the Agriculture Reseach Station.
