Hydrangea macrophylla 'Forever and Ever' synonym of Hydrangea macrophylla 'Early Sensation' (Forever and Ever Series)

Description: A very compact form of mop-head hydrangea which provides colour throughout the summer. The inflorescence of flowers are produced earlier than most hydrangeas in June and continuing until the frost. The colour changes from rich pink to stunning deep red in cooler weather. Flowers are produced on stems from the current season and the previous seasons growth. This is why there is colour whatever the winter weather has been like. Avoiding pruning will ensure that buds are not removed for the double show of colour.

The glossy rich green foliage stays green until frost, Hydrangeas continue to be among the showiest of summer and autumn flowering woody plants.

Uses: They are shade tolerant and grow well on the shady side of a building or under trees. This dwarf variety also suited to container growing. The dried flower heads are often used in flower arrangements

Climate/Position: Prefers a sheltered site in light shade. protect from the coldest winter frosts. Avoid full sun in spring and summer.

Height/Spread: Dwarf - less than 1 metre

Soil Requirements: Fertile soil prefered. As with many hydrangeas, the colour of the flower is influenced by the soil pH.

Pruning: Avoid pruning where possible as next years flowers may be removed. If pruning required then this should be undertaken late spring but some flowering wood will be removed.

Special Requirements: Mulch to maintain moisture. This cultivar suits alkaline soils as the flowers will be shades of pink. On acid soils the flowers may have a bluish colouring.
