Nursery Supervisor (Specimen Stock)
Hours: 42.5 hours per week (Saturday AM on a rota basis).
Salary: £27,500 - £30,000 depending on experience and relevant qualifications.

Overall role purpose
Responsible for the display of all plant stock including aftercare. Responsible for the accurate labeling of plant stock, and the on-going checking of description information of labeling and consistency. Responsible for the Health & Safety welfare of the Nursery Workers they are supervising. Timely unloading of plant deliveries and ensuring correct return of Danish trollies/shelves onto delivery vehicles.
Scope
Maintain and supervise the complete care of plant stock on its journey through the site.
Key accountabilities:
- Plant merchandising
- Plants set-down in correct location
- Plants correctly labelled
- Liaison with other Provender employees as required, including;
- Nursery team
- Transport
- Sales team (Quoted Sales and Ecommerce)
- Cash and carry
- Sundries
- Watering of plant stock / irrigation on a day-to-day basis; inc. supervising other team members
- Training new staff how to water stock correctly
- Monitor stock and ensure no dry stock across specimen stock
- Check drippers – weekly inspections during spring and summer months (March – September)
- Check sprinklers – weekly inspections throughout the spring and summer months (March – September)
- Unloading deliveries in and outside the Barn/Bio-security/Plant Health
- Pest and disease – ensure all stock entering the site on trollies are pest or disease free. Escalate any stock/plants found with pest or disease, to Nursery Operations Manager and ensure delivery paperwork is duly noted with appropriate description of pest/disease
- Broken and damaged stock – check plant deliveries and escalate any broken/damaged stock to Nursery Operations Manager and ensure delivery paperwork is duly noted with appropriate description of damage/breakages
- Ensure stock being checked-off matches the delivery note exactly. Highlight discrepancies on corresponding paperwork and escalate to Nursery Operations Manager immediately
- Ensure all stock that require tamper proof labels are attached when unloading deliveries - refer to front delivery sheet for information on stock names. Any stock that does not have labels attached should be escalated to Nursery Operations Manager immediately for action
- Check all deliveries have plant passports correctly displayed – all plants should have a plant passport on the smallest number of units
- Record all plant passport numbers on the Goods-in check sheet (UK and EU)
- Ensure that each delivery/load coming from outside the UK has a Phytosanitary certificate. Non-compliance of this should be escalated to Nursery Operations Manager immediately
- Ensure CMR or road consignment note is included with every international stock/plant delivery. Where no CMR or road consignment note is found escalate this to Nursery Operations Manager immediately for action
- Ensure that all stock/plant deliveries contain a Supplier Delivery note to enable accurate check of actual stock delivered. Where no Supplier Delivery note is found escalate to Nursery Operations Manager for action
- Plant Health Standards Awareness and maintenance; ensuring all team members understand and uphold the standards required on site
- Standing down stock
- Ensure plants are in the correct location according to their variety and plant type
- Ensure all labels are facing forward when standing stock down
- Stock rotation – ensure that older plant stock is moved to the front of the bed whenever standing down stock
- Identify ‘slow moving plant lines/stock’ (e.g., have been sat on the bed for over 12 months or visually looks unappealing) and escalate to Nursery Operations Manager for action
- Ensure plant description is correct on label and if incorrect remove label and request Nursery Admin to amend labels/print new descriptions and correct passport information
- Ensure all labels contain the country of origin. Escalate to Nursery Admin and request them to reprint with country of origin on new label
- Plant Husbandry
- Pruning plants – ensure all plants are pruned according to seasons/any cosmetic damage
- Weed control and weeding – ensure all beds are kept weed free. Instruct team members with PA1 and PA6 certification to spray for weeds. Ensure all herbaceous plants/shrubs are hand weeded. Weeding and weed control should be undertaken and inspected weekly
- Ensure watering is maintained to the set standards (see above)
- Ensure all shrubs are dead headed at the end of the Spring/end of flowering season dependent on shrub
- Ensure dead wooding for all shrubs is carried on throughout the year and undertake quarterly inspections to ensure this is being maintained
- Ensure all plants and shrubs are fed from March to April using Osmocote Fertilizer and again before Autum season starts, i.e., during August/September Feeding. Additional feeding for specific varieties of plants to be administered upon general inspection
- Ensure each plant/shrub is spaced appropriately i.e., ensure hand-width space between each pot and relative bloom when in green
- Plant Wastage Recording; inc. managing the handling of waste products on site into the appropriate disposal stream
- Identify dead plants/stock and remove from beds
- Ensure removed dead plants/stock are scanned and taken off Positive
- Complete the reason sheets for wasting plants and give paperwork to Nursery Operations Manager

Person Specification
- Commercial nursery experience
- Forklift license
- NDH or equivalent qualifications
- Demonstrate good attention to detail and work well under pressure during the peak season – physically demanding role due to the nature and size of tree and shrub products
- Ability to supervise a team of diverse individuals with differing levels of experience
