Chimonanthus praecox – Wintersweet – it most certainly is!
So aptly named – Wintersweet and that is exactly what is is!
Early to flower - hence praecox (little Latin lesson there!) and bathed in gloriously slightly dusky waxy yellow flowers with purple stained central petals on bare stems as with most winter flowering shrubs.
Flowers are produced on mature plants and so smaller plants tend not to be available or patience is required. Sweetly scented and reaches a height and spread of 3m. Best planted against a sunny wall where the scent will be more powerful in the winter sunshine this is a plant no winter interest garden should be without.
