Chamaecyparis obtusa 'Nana Gracilis'

Common name: Hinoke False Cypress
Family: Cupressaceae

Origin: Species originated in Japan

Description: A shapely and distinctive conifer due to its unique dark green shell shaped sprays of foliage which appear to form waves and which develop into an uneven conical shaped conifer. A deservedly popular plant which is slow growing and so suitable for a range of sites and the smaller garden and useful in mixed borders or larger rockeries.

Climate/Position: Full sun or shade. Best avoid very exposed positions.

Height/Spread: Slow growing but will eventually reach up to 6 metres.

Soil Requirements: Moist but well-drained. Will tolerate most soil types

Pruning: Avoid pruning to maintain shape. However, if needed, branches may be reduced carefully in late winter.

Raised in UK circa 1874 by Rogers and Son of Southhampton.

(The first Latin name I learned and remains a personal favourite.)

RHS Award of Garden Merit

Awarded AGM in 1993 for outstanding excellence
